Troubleshooting: Device Not Responding

Overview

If a KanexPro control device (processor, expander, keypad, or touch panel) is not responding to commands or not appearing on the network, work through these steps in order.

Step 1 — Verify Power

  • PoE devices (keypads, panels, expanders): Confirm the Ethernet cable is connected to a PoE-capable switch port. Verify the switch port is PoE-enabled and has sufficient power budget. The LED on the device should illuminate on power-up.
  • Control processors (CR-HOST6S, CR-HOST8R): Confirm the power supply is connected and the power LED is on.

Step 2 — Verify Network Connectivity

  • Confirm the Ethernet cable is fully seated at both the device and the switch.
  • Check the switch port link LED — it should be lit and active.
  • Try pinging the device’s IP address from a computer on the same subnet. No response = IP issue or device not booted.
  • If DHCP is in use, check the DHCP server lease table to confirm the device received an address.

Step 3 — Verify IP Addressing

  • All control devices default to DHCP. If the DHCP server is unavailable, the device may fall back to a link-local address (169.254.x.x).
  • For production installs, assign static IPs via the device web GUI to avoid addressing issues after network changes.
  • Ensure the controlling computer or processor is on the same subnet as the target device.

Step 4 — Access the Web GUI

  • Enter the device’s IP address in a browser. If the GUI does not load, the device may not have fully booted — allow 60 seconds after power-on.
  • Default credentials: admin / admin (change after first login).
  • Verify the device firmware version and check for available updates.

Step 5 — RS-232 / IR / Relay Not Working

  • Verify the port is correctly configured in the script (baud rate, data bits, stop bits, parity for RS-232).
  • Check the cable pinout — RS-232 null modem vs. straight-through matters for some devices.
  • For IR: confirm the IR emitter is positioned correctly over the device’s IR receiver window.
  • For relay: confirm normally open (NO) vs. normally closed (NC) wiring matches your load.
  • Check the script logic — confirm the command is being triggered by the correct event.

Step 6 — Keypad / Panel Not Sending Commands

  • Confirm the keypad is registered to the correct processor IP address in its configuration.
  • Check the button action mapping in the programming interface — confirm the button event is linked to a command.
  • Re-save and re-push the script to the processor after any changes.

Step 7 — Factory Reset

Hold the reset button on the rear panel for 10 seconds to restore factory defaults. The device will reboot and return to DHCP mode. Reconfigure via the web GUI.
